On Wednesday, October 7th, a Beech BE 35 aircraft crashed in a cow pasture near the University of Tennessee in South Knoxville.  Heavy fog was listed as a possible cause of the incident, but further investigation is necessary.

The owner of the plane is 51-year-old Knoxville resident, Dr. Christopher A. Landess, a regional medical director for a TeamHealth affiliate.  The passenger was Dr. Jeff Williams, 45, of Mount Juliet.  Miraculously, both men sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say Landess departed from the Knoxville Downtown Island Airport shortly before 6:45 a.m. and steered towards Morristown Regional Airport.  However, shortly after takeoff, the Knoxville Fire Department received a call that the plane had crashed.

Both men are very fortunate to walk away from the incident with their lives and health.  Many plane crashes do not have this positive of an outcome.  Traveling by air is considered to be one of the safest modes of transportation – much safer than driving.  However, that does not mean that flying doesn’t carry certain risks.

Common Causes of Plane Accidents

Plane crashes can be blamed on a variety reasons including pilot error, mechanical failure, severe weather conditions, a defect in the design of the plane as well as an air traffic controller error.  Whatever the cause of the accident, most of them are incredibly disastrous or fatal.
