Memphis High School Wins 2015 Tennessee Science Bowl

Residents of Memphis have one more reason to be proud. The exceptionally gifted science students of Lausanne Collegiate School, a local college preparatory academy, won this year’s Tennessee Science Bowl which took place in February. This victory for the high school students comes after many hours spent studying up on mathematics and various sciences—not to mention beating out 53 other state high schools.

The scientific disciplines highlighted in the competition included: chemistry, earth sciences, energy, physics, space sciences and biology.

The science bowl took place at Blount County Campus, a division of Pellissippi State Community College, and stands as the third largest competition in the nation. The goal of the Tennessee Science Bowl is to prepare high school students to be able to compete at a national level. Lausanne’s students will now travel to the DOE National Science Bowl (April 30-May 4) in our nation’s capital (all expenses paid) with $1,000 in cash and a trophy in hand.

Hardin Valley Academy (Knoxville), Farragut High School (Knoxville), and Hume-Fogg High Academic Magnet School (Nashville) came in second ($750), third ($500) and fourth ($250), respectively. Two other awards were given out at the competition as well. Merrol Hyde High School of Hendersonville was presented with the Civility Award. Additionally, a new award (the Albert Award) was presented to Maryville High School. This award celebrates creativity in presenting a school’s mascot in a video.

DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory Site Office Manager Johnny Moore feels that students who compete in these bowls don’t compete to win, but rather for their own personal validation of their studying and passion for the sciences. Furthermore, Moore feels that by witnessing these types of high-level competitions, he gets a sneak peak at some of the future scientific leaders of America.
