Johnson & Johnson Ordered To Pay $246M Over Faulty Hip Implants

The latest in hip replacement litigation involves another Johnson & Johnson payout.

The parent company of DePuy Orthopaedics has been ordered to pay $246 million in damages to a total of six plaintiffs who sued over a defective hip replacement system.

Lawsuit Against Depuy Pinnacle

The DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip replacement system included the Ultamet liner. Per plaintiffs, this liner was defective and ended up causing a myriad of complications, including pseudotumors, bone loss, and tissue death.

Plaintiffs also argued that Johnson & Johnson and DePuy Pinnacle knew that the device was defective and failed to warn doctors and patients.

Plaintiffs Awarded

This was the fourth bellwether trial against DePuy. Of the trials, three were in favor of the plaintiffs and one for Johnson & Johnson.

Below is a list the plaintiffs and his or her award, as stated by the recently filed court documents:

• Michael Stevens receives $37.8 million
• Uriel Barzel receives $39.4 million
• Hazel Miura receives $43.7 million
• Karen Kirchner receives $48.6 million
• Ramon Alicea receives $39.8 million
• Eugene Stevens receives $36.8 million

Although the jury awarded the plaintiffs a total of $247 million, the plaintiffs accepted a smaller amount due to private insurance taking care medical bills in the amount of totaling $1.2 billion.
