India Patients Hit Brick Wall in Pinnacle Hip Implant Lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson’s reputation continues to grow in the medical field, but not for the better. Known for its gentle lotions and baby powders, “the family company” has been facing lawsuits for defective hip replacements ever since its ASR line was recalled in 2010.

Their newest line, the Pinnacle hip implant, is also stirring controversy here in the U.S. and overseas. Most recently, J&J agreed to settle approximately 6,000 lawsuits, costing them $1 billion.

Patients in India haven’t been so lucky.

The corporate giant claimed there were no negative results from patients who underwent the surgery, but inquiries made by The Indian Express show otherwise.

So far, 7 patients who underwent surgery for the Pinnacle hip implant have been identified due to suffering from cobalt-chromium ions leaking into their bloodstreams which caused pain, blood poisoning, and damage to internal organs.

J&J is currently challenging these accusations with the Delhi High Court.

Co-convener Malini Aisola of the patients’ rights group, All India Drug Action Network (AIDAN), said:

“Pinnacle has a sordid regulatory history much the same as the ASR. There is really nothing to distinguish the two implants in terms of severe adverse events… And the government is well aware of this implant being faulty but continues to remain silent.”
