The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Mattel has recalled approximately 9.3 million toys due to small magnets in the toys coming loose during use. The toys include the Polly Pocket (sold between 2003 and 2006), Doggie Day Care (sold between 2004 and 2007), Batman and One Piece (sold between 2006 and 2007), and Barbie and Tanner (sold between 2006 and 2007) products. According to the CPSC the small magnets inside the toys can fall out, and the magnets can be swallowed or aspirated by young children. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal. Parents should retrieve all such toys from children and contact Mattel for a replacement. For more information on specific model numbers and contact information visit www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerelaug07.html.
Gilreath & Associates has been retained to represent injured victims of the Selmer drag race tragedy. The firm’s investigation is currently focused on determining why Selmer city officials may not have required a parade permit and proof of adequate public safety measures before conducting the ill-fated Cars for Kids charity event. The firm will also investigate to determine why dragster driver Troy Critchley veered into the crowd after speeding down the public roadway and why no crash barriers were apparently requested or installed to protect the expected 25,000 fair visitors. Ultimately, Gilreath & Associates seeks to determine whether the City of Selmer, local police and fire officials, event organizers, and/or Troy Critchley acted negligently, or in violation of local or State laws, in planning and conducting the Selmer drag race event.
